The United Nations Security Council approved the one-year UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) consisting of seven thousand military personnel and up to 900 civilians, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, told reporters Friday.
The launch of the Mission coincides with the visit of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to Juba, the capital of South Sudan, to attend the independence ceremony, which took place Saturday. Haq confirmed the Secretary General also visited Khartoum, where he expressed that the future of both countries, even after the independence declaration, will be 'closely linked'.
