Description

March 14, 2004

  1. The U.S. appears to have helped in the overthrow of Haiti's President, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. While a lot of media reporting claimed he fled, Aristide and witnesses say U.S. marines forced Aristide to leave. The page on Haiti has been updated with more information about Haiti's long history (including colonial, slavery, 20th century occupation) as well as information about the recent uprising and overthrow of President Aristide.
  2. The U.S. has been involved in supporting opposition groups to overthrow Venezuela's Hugo Chavez. In the April 2002 coup which just lasted about three days, the democratically elected Chavez was replaced by a military dictatorship, though he eventually managed to regain power. More information has come to surface about the long-suspected secret involvement of the U.S. in supporting opposition groups to Chavez. Additional updates on media reporting have also been added.
  3. The legal justification for the war on Iraq has once again come under scrutiny. The Iraq section has been updated. Updates are around issues surrounding the legal justifications for war and also the geopolitics and neo-conservative agenda.
  4. Some additional articles on the “war on terror” have been re-posted. These include a look at home land security and human rights abuses in the name of fighting terrorism.

Tip on how to use a new feature to highlight updated parts of pages

  • If you have a modern browser, look for the Last Updated date text near the top of the article.
  • If the text is underlined, you can select it.
  • This will bring up a list of dates when the page was updated. (Note only dates since the beginning of 2004, when this new feature was created, will show.)
  • When you select a date, the text that was updated on that date will be highlighted.
  • As you scroll down the page, you will see those highlighted sections.
  • I hope that helps you to find the updated sections more easily!
